thick as thieves

yesterday was DCAD's trip to new york city. we awoke at the buttcrack of dawn to wait for the buses to drive us up to our destination. the morning was absolutely beautiful. the fog was very thick and made you feel as though you were in the clouds. isn't it amazing? fog, i mean. it only allows you to see ten feet in front of your face. but, you see more and more as you walk through it. like it's slowly revealing something magnificent. it made me think of a quote i once heard.

"you can only see as far as you headlights will shine, but you can make the whole trip that way."

it's funny how a foggy morning is like a metaphor for our lives. we're just coasting through, never knowing what is in front of us, but hoping like hell we are making the right decisions. even when you think you know where you are going because you've travelled this road before, things can sneak up on you. maybe a sharp turn that you didn't anticipate would come so quickly. or a stray dog lazily walking across the road.

an obstacle will cross your path and the only thing you can do is make a decision about what to do with it. you cannot look into the future. the fog is hiding that.

but you can look into the past and learn from your experiences.
