the uncontrollable earth

class today really made me think. we were learning about the make-up of buildings and how they bear loads. as a species i think humans truly believe that we have evolved a great deal. unfortunately, i completely disagree.
cynthia is teaching us about what happens when weight is distributed in different ways. we, the human species, have given all these physical properties of materials long confusing names that we make designers, architects, engineers, and constructors memorize. cynthia tells us that all of this is pure math, geometry, and physics. the people that teach us this can figure out equations to learn what will collapse and what will not, but they lack the ability to step back and admire the beauty of all the things given to us by god.
it absolutely amazes me that humans, in general, need to know that they can control anything to have comfort in their hearts. Yet in reality the only thing that will give us comfort is knowing that we will never be in control.
if you think back to your childhood, it makes much more sense. your naive little hearts couldn't get enough of thrill rides like roller coasters. because (no matter how hard you try to convince yourself otherwise) you are not in control.
architects think they are beating mother nature and creating a way to live peaceably and comfortably despite her tries in the opposite direction. but they are not. in all reality, nature could sweep a house over at any given point. we may be able to predict some weather, but we sure as hell can't change it. we are not controlling materials by doing equations. merely figuring out what they will do on their own. we are stacking wood, don't you see? just like primitive men. this is nothing incredibly sophisticated. we are still merely meeting physical needs to survive. we have not yet found a way for mother nature to do our work for us. and when houses start building themselves, maybe then we can say we've evolved.

god is love, uncontrolled.
