as you know i am an art major. i love art. it is my passion in life. it is the one thing that has never let me down since mr. placko's art class in 1st grade. on the opposite side of the spectrum, i am dating a mechanic. this lifestyle and passion is completely different from anything i have ever desired. and the difference never ceases to amaze me. since i naturally love learning i have picked up some basic information about cars throughout the past 2 years of knowing brian. but the complexity of the subject is far from my grasp.
when i learn about art and when i create art, a lot of times i am looking to capture a whole idea, feeling, or area in one piece of artwork. one of art's focus' is on what we as humans cannot comprehend. jackson pollack is an inovator in art. he paints feelings and what we cannot see. his work is amazing. (not so breathtaking if you google it, but you'll get the picture. when you see it in person it's like you can feel what he is feeling... amazing)
on the other hand, the automotive field completely revolves around human innovation. the only aspects involved are aspects that somebody discovered or invented. all of it is understood and comprehensible. the complexity exists not because we cannot understand it, but because we can understand it.
let's take a tattoo artist for example. this is something i've always dreamed of doing, but never pursued. their main goal in life is to be great at what they do. they have a passion for ink and the eternal qualities of tattooing a human being. they not only express themselves through stylization, but help the customers express themselves, through the subject matter of the tattoo.
now for an example of car people, racers. i went to atco this past weekend. this is what started the whole blog. and the diversity of people with the same goal completely amazed me. these people come to the race with a car that they have been preparing all year. they switched out entire engines, rebuilt transmissions, and even repainted cars. the sheer knowledge that these men (women, too) retain is absolutely astonishing. they might not be able to tell you what contrapposto is, but they can tell you what came stock on a 74 mustang.
my whole point of this is not only to contrast the two groups of people, but to make people realize that the world could not function without one of the groups. artists rely on machines and technology. if it weren't for artists and designers all cars would look alike, except under the hood.
lifestyles may differ, but don't ever put someone down because they think differently than you. you rely on them more than you will ever know. there is no such thing as one career being better than another. do what you love, not what pays the most. have respect.
